In three short weeks, we organised a post-pandemic practice match for the community, working closely with Latrobe City Council, the AFL, and the two respective teams. Held at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, the event saw many people in the hours leading up to the first bounce, attracting around 4,500 spectators to watch the Hawks and Pies battle it out.
The Latrobe City Council has fostered a longstanding relationship with the AFL, particularly through its association with the Latrobe Valley Authority in hosting such grassroots sporting events. These events serve as a platform for player engagement at local schools and leave a significant economic footprint on the surrounding businesses. Moreover, they offer fans a rare opportunity to watch their heroes in action, an experience they may not often get.
It was a lot of work, but thanks to the support of some fantastic suppliers and volunteer community groups, we were able to pull it all together and be at the helm of event delivery.
